Create a Logo Design and Branding Using Only an iPad
I am pleased to share with you the latest #LiveCreativePro Course: Create a Logo Design Using Only an iPad. In this series, I am going to focus on design using only an iPad Pro, Apple Pencil, Pinterest, and two apps from Adobe (Adobe Capture and Adobe Sketch).
My goal with this course is to show you how using a few free tools you can create a unique, professional brand identity. You will not need Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, or other premium tools to complete this course.
Using just the iPad Pro and an Apple Pencil, I’ll start by showing you how to create a “Pinterest Inspiration Board” to collect photos in Pinterest of inspiring website design layouts, fonts/typography, photography, and colors.
Once we’ve finished adding inspirational images to the pinboard, we’ll select a photo to extract the color palette for the brand identity using the Adobe Capture iPad app. First generating the primary color palette, we’ll then use Capture to find complementary colors for a secondary color set (or the call-to-action color) for our design.
Finally, we’ll convert the photo to grayscale in the native Apple Photos app and then take it into Adobe Capture to create a grayscale version of the color palette for a modern website design layout (for instance).
Once we’ve created the color palette for our brand identity, we’ll use the Adobe Sketch iPad app to start sketching out a unique logo design for our brand. While I’m sketching, I’ll share a few anecdotal stories to help inspire you through the creative process.
Hopefully, without plagiarizing the work of others, we’ll refer back to our Pinterest Inspiration Board as a reference for our brand look and feel to create our unique design.
The importance of a professional looking brand, depending on who you ask, is all about perspective. Some people think that branding is not as important and that’s it’s more important to understand your audience, get your product or services to market, and start selling.
While I agree those things are, indeed, important: beginning with a well thought out brand identity, in the beginning, accomplishes a few things:
- First, it will instill trust during the engagement phase with your audience;
- Second, successful design and branding tells the world you take yourself seriously;
- And third, just like dressing up for a job interview, a well-designed brand creates a strong first impression.
If you’re not an expert designer, don’t worry, the goal here is not perfection. Perfection is highly overrated, but what is necessary is a commitment to just the job done and do your best.
So, in this tutorial, using a few free tools on the iPad Pro, I’m going to show you few pro tips and tricks for efficiently creating your own well-defined brand identity. I’m using the iPad Pro because I want to reinforce the idea this is something that anyone can do.
Hiring a Professional to Help Create a Logo Design and Branding
Then, if you decide to work with a professional designer to refine your logo design concept, there are plenty of options out there, depending on your budget. On that note, Fivvr is indeed an option, but keep in mind, the quality will equal your investment. Finally, a great designer, like any professional, should have experience, expertise, knowledgeable, and well trained in brand identity and logo design.
We’re going to do this on the iPad because I wanted to reinforce this idea that anybody can do this. And, if you decide to work with a designer, there are lots of options out there – anywhere from a site like Fivver where you can hire somebody to design a logo for you (though I don’t recommend it: I think that terms of designers into commodities), or you can hire a freelance designer or an agency.
When working with a designer, either freelance or through an agency, they will likely provide you with a creative questionnaire. This questionnaire will ask you many vital questions about you, your personality, your taste, and style. As well, it should ask you essential questions about your business, audience, customers, your products or services, competitors, and your industry.
Whether you choose to complete the creative process of conceptualizing your logo design and branding on your own or if you decided to hire a professional designer to help you fine-tune your design concept.
